BAE Systems has welcomed a one year, $12 million contract extension that will see the company support the Royal Australian Navy’s Hydrographic fleet until 2020. Around 60 people based in Cairns are directly involved with the In Service Support Contract, valued at $436 million. The Department of Defence has awarded Austria’s Schiebel Group a contract to supply its Camcopter S-100 to meet the Royal Australian Navy’s interim vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial system (UAS) requirement. Featuring a carbon fibre and titanium fuselage, the S-100 has a maximum takeoff weight of 200kg and can carry a 34kg payload of electro-optics and infrared sensors for up to 10 hours. Elbit Systems announced that a Brazilian subsidiary, Ares Aeroespacial e Defesa S.A. ("Ares"), was awarded a framework contract, in a total value of approximately $100 million, to supply 12.7/7.62 mm Remote Controlled Weapon Stations ("RCWS") to the Brazilian Army. The contract includes associated equipment and services. The RCWS, named REMAX, will be supplied over a five-year period.
